Three months of training as Guest Service Assistant in Bangkok's hotel, I've seen many travelers looking for the cheapest way to DMK airport. My hotel is located in the downtown and the meter taxi to DMK airport costs about 400 THB. Many of them complained expensive.
There's actually an alternative way which cost less than 100 THB per person.
Well, Enric and I tried to save money even though we have 2 big luggages of 32" height, or more. Imagine, dragging these huge luggages for about 15 minutes to the nearest Skytrain to get to Mo Chit (if you're taking MRT, stop at Chatuchak). This takes about 45 minutes to arrive. This cost me only 22 THB as I hold a Rabbit card (price vary depending on which station you took from). Go to the bus station and walk further ahead for the DMK shuttle bus. The bus came every half an hour. Look for the bus number "A1" and hops in. It cost roughly about 30 THB if I'm not mistaken. The journey to the airport tooks roughly 15 - 30 minutes depending on the traffic. The bus stops directly in front of the departure gate. No worries! BUT remember, this is very time consuming and you should depart from your hotel earlier.
There's also more alternative ways:
1. Take BTS Skytrain to Victory Monument, then take the bus "A2"
2. Take MRT to Chatuchak, then take the bus "A1" (as mentioned above)
For Suvarnabhumi Airport (international flight), you can only take MRT to Petchaburi and walk to Airport Link, from Makkasan to Suvarnabhumi Airport.
If you want less hassle, just pay the taxi.
Cheers!
